While Palm Springs is very much a getaway from L.A., it’s also close enough to feel like a staycation. I recently spent one night for my birthday at the Colony Palms Hotel, which I had previously never been to.
The boutique hotel is gorgeous, and on a Sunday it was pretty mellow. There’s an old-school Moroccan vibe thanks to the textiles and tiling, and the amount of greenery on the property and the balconies on the buildings also reminded me a bit of the south. All of it is very fitting for the sometimes (often) very warm weather.
I love a bit of history with my hotel stays, and the Colony Palms does not disappoint in that regard. The hotel has been around since 1936 and was a popular destination back in the day, once hosting Frank Sinatra for an extended homestay.
This I particularly appreciate, since Frank also spent a lot of time where I live in L.A., a building that was formerly a hotel in the same era. (If anyone knew how to make the most of a hotel stay it sounds like old Hollywood really had a great handle on it. I admire that.)
Being at the Colony Palms for less than 24 hours did not afford me tons of time to enjoy everything that the hotel has to offer (the spa and restaurant, for example), but I did have a very relaxing drink by the pool (chardonnay) and made some new L.A. based friends so I’d consider it a very successful overnight in a stunning setting. Next time…longer stay.
